Coffee grounds and oils can collect in a grinder's chamber and chute. Regular cleaning helps keep old residue from mixing with a new batch and offers an opportunity to inspect the machine. Start with the manual for your exact grinder: not every burr, hopper or chute can be removed or washed.
This checklist is for planning routine care. It does not replace the manufacturer's instructions or provide a repair procedure for an electrical appliance.
Read the instructions for your model
Find the model name and its cleaning section. Check which parts can be removed without tools, which cleaning materials are approved, and how the parts must be reassembled. If something resists removal, stop and consult the manual instead of forcing it.
Baratza's grinder cleaning guide recommends unplugging the grinder before cleaning and describes removing loose grounds from accessible areas. A procedure for one burr assembly may not apply to another.
Make a note of your current grind setting before you begin if the adjustment will change during cleaning. It gives you a starting point when you brew again, though a small adjustment may still be needed.
Disconnect and prepare
Turn off and unplug the grinder before handling removable parts or the chamber. Allow the machine to stop fully. Keep the power cord and electrical housing away from water, and follow its safety instructions.
Prepare a clean, dry workspace with good light. A soft brush, dry cloth and container for loose grounds may be useful if the manual permits them. Keep small removable pieces together and do not disassemble parts beyond the routine procedure described by the maker.
